Geese feel very safe on an airport’s tarmac due to the wide-open spaces and lack of predators.
Our Dogs Make Airports Safer
Geese colliding with airplanes in the air have caused several plane crashes, some of which have been fatal. The most well-known incident involving a collision of a plane and a flock of geese occurred in 2009 to a US Airways flight that experienced power loss but was ultimately successfully landed in the Hudson River.
In 1995, a U.S. Air Force aircraft in Alaska struck a flock of Canada geese during takeoff. This caused it to lose power in both port side engines. It crashed 2 miles from the runway, and all 24 crew members were killed.
Airport Dogs At Work
“Airport dogs” have been a hot topic in the news lately, with several regional and national networks covering the stories of dogs who patrol airports to haze geese and other birds. Some airports have purchased a dog and trained an employee to handle the dog for this purpose. However, the amount of time it takes to effectively establish a presence with the birds is more than most regional airports can spare. Because of Driven Wild, airports in the Twin Cities metro area and beyond now have the option of using dogs while saving your employees’ time and energy.
Driven Wild provides regular goose patrols at your airport to keep these birds from getting near airplanes during takeoff, landing, and while taxiing. A Canada goose can weigh up to 13 pounds, so a single goose is enough to do damage if it is in the wrong place at the wrong time. We ensure that geese don’t see your airport as a safe space and will move along to other sites quickly without interfering with the operations of the airport. Other types of birds can also be dissuaded from resting on your property using dog patrols. You can expect to see drastic reductions in the population of birds on your tarmac within a week or two of our dogs establishing their presence. Customers value safety over all else when traveling by air, and Driven Wild’s services can give everyone involved one less thing to worry about.
