Canada geese hazing techniques include decoys, flashing lights, noise makers, and harassment with dogs. Not all methods of harassment are created equal, though. Depending on the situation, certain methods may prove completely ineffective as a long-term solution. In fact, many property owners find they’ve tried multiple methods of goose management with little success from year to year.
Driven Wild Goose Control’s multi-pronged strategy of humane goose hazing stops the cycle of trying out a new deterrent every season. We stick with what works: using our highly trained Border Collies to flush geese out of your fields, ponds, lakes, and yards.
Hazing Canada Geese Using Dogs and Supplements
By using dogs for humane goose hazing, we ensure maximum efficacy. This is because dogs are a natural predator of the Canada goose, so when they see a dog in their habitat they are easily dissuaded from sticking around. Although this method does trick the geese into thinking there are predators in the area, the dogs never actually come into contact with the geese and are not aggressive toward them in any way.
Sometimes there are unique circumstances that require us to use supplemental methods of harassment. However, the dogs are always our first line of defense against pesky geese. If a property is situated on a large body of water such as a lake, we can cover more water by using remote control boats in addition to our swimming dogs. A boat is also able to push the geese further out from shore, which increases the chances of them leaving the area.
Another harassment method involves using lasers during dawn and dusk. The special lasers we use will not harm the geese in any way, but they are unsettled by the appearance of the laser on land or water. This works similarly to the floating buoys with flashing lights which you will often see in bodies of water to deter geese. When the geese come in and see a strobing light or laser, they are unsure of what to make of the environmental disturbance. Since there are so many other suitable habitats in the area, the geese would much rather find a different area to nest or roost.

Long-Term Results from Hazing of Canada Geese
Our clients often wonder what they can expect long-term after months of a geese harassment program. We have certainly “lost” some clients by completely scaring off their geese for years, but other clients do require a goose control refresh each season. Geese are much easier to keep away over the course of a season than from one spring to the next. Their brains are programmed to return them to the location where they hatched every year, so they generally must be scared off each spring.
After a few months of intense goose mitigation and regular visits, we are able to drastically reduce the visits made to the property while still keeping geese away. This decreases the cost of our services over the course of a year. Just as you would hire a snow removal or landscaping company for a full year, our services are also offered for the entire goose season – spring to fall in Minnesota.
Humane Goose Hazing for Minnesota Businesses
If you are searching for that “holy grail” of goose mitigation for your business or organization, harassment or hazing is the solution. Many of Driven Wild Goose Control’s clients have remarked that they’ve tried everything in the past to keep geese away and nothing lasts longer than a few months. These are the same clients we’ve now worked with year after year at an affordable rate to maintain a goose-free property.
